El Buen Patrón plot

The story is set in and around the Blancos Básculas factory, where everything must always be in balance. After all, they make scales in all shapes and sizes. There, the apparently benevolent boss Blanco prepares his staff for an upcoming inspection by a group that visits local businesses to pick one for a prestigious award. However, tensions mount when the recently fired Jose shows up with his two children and begins demanding that he be rehired.

Wonderful movie. At times, the film is even reminiscent of the masterpieces Uncut Gems and Punch-Drunk Love in terms of direction, in terms of location (on the work floor) and craziness and camera work, although those other films have taken that much further and are correspondingly better. But this Spanish print has better humour. Sometimes jet black, but very nice humor, especially because it comes from the characters and not so much from the situations. There are funny moments because we as viewers are now completely with Bardem and can understand his annoyance, frustrations, fear, despair that make the situations in which he comes funny. It is also Bardem who steals the show here. He is in almost every shot and carries the film with playful ease. Nice also that despite all the cynicism Bardem still comes out as the winner at the end, usually morality wins, not this time. 4.0*.

Good film about the boss of a factory who treats all his employees well. A film about a boss who slowly loses control. The different lines that are set out that the main character has to deal with are well worked out. Great role by Javier Bardem and the tone is also nice (not too serious and not too funny).

I am currently working on the book "Most people are good" by Rutger Bregman, which tries to create a positive image of our human history. One of the analyzes that emerge in the book is the philosophical thinking of Thomas Hobbes and JJ. Rousseau that are perpendicular to each other. I often thought of both philosophers when I saw this film. The philosopher will undoubtedly be able to explain it better than myself, I suspect.

In a Rousseauian way, patron Julio Blanco treats his staff in a very friendly and family way. They gain a lot of trust and he considers every issue, big or small, work or private related, his own. As long as the balance is preserved, the balance of the company and that of life. Touching almost and a special charismatic Javier Bardem who is one with his character and who carries the film completely. He is a particularly proud man who sees a new award as "best employer" as an honor. Not that he pretends to be much different than usual, but the run-up to the election with the associated company visit by the jury does cause him some concern if not everything goes as he had hoped.

Hobbes assumes the opposite view that man is unreliable and must be guided by rules, structure and authority. Control and hierarchy are necessary to keep things running. The question is to what extent the patron comes to this realization. The striking ex-employee, his right-hand man Miralles, his secretary with the printer, the good-for-nothing of a son of old faithful Fortuna ... these are all human flaws, but they also seriously upset the balance. The film tries to balance both components, which leads to a fascinating film, partly due to the ever-great Bardem. Nice and satirical with a touch of humor and lightness. Nice!
