Enthusiastic animation adaptation of the popular children's book series, which mainly takes some events from its source material and pastes them together. The scenes are linked together with a somewhat predictable moral, but it comes out rather half-heartedly. Of course, you can't expect a film that doesn't even reach 60 minutes to develop the characters in any convincing way, but their adventures in combination with the drawing style are ultimately fascinating enough. The voice cast also does it enthusiastically enough to keep things moving along, but after a while the lack of variety makes for a somewhat tiring last 20 minutes.

About Greg, an insecure boy who stumbles from one painful situation to another at school. Based on the book series by Jeff Kinney. After several reasonably successful film adaptations, the fourth film was not received very enthusiastically. Hence a new setup. Diary of a Winpy Kid is an animation. This is fitting in itself, as the book series is also richly illustrated. The book illustrations are reminiscent of the comic strips you used to see in the newspaper. Although the animated film starts as a two-dimensional cartoon, it quickly transitions into a CGI film à la The Peanuts Movie (2015).

The film doesn't really benefit from that technique. The film looks rather empty. Not much energy was invested in the backgrounds. The reason for this most likely lies in the modest budget available. Once you get used to it, the visual experience is quite okay. The design of the characters is nice and could be described as distinctive. In terms of content, the story is entertaining. It is not difficult to identify with Greg. Greg, who struggles with the unwritten laws that apply at school. Greg, who longs to be noticed and to belong. Greg, who experiences how friendships can suddenly change.

The tone adopted is lighthearted. Naturally, some life lessons are offered, but they certainly do not come across as preachy. Additionally, there are some funny scenes that add the necessary spice to the episodically told story about a school course. It is absolutely fun to experience the funny and lifelike stories about hell at school.
