A disappointment for director Mike Mills, this drama shot in pretentious black-and-white about the relationship between documentary filmmaker Joaquin Phoenix and his nephew (Woody Norman), whom he has to take care of for a few weeks. Phoenix is always worth watching and the film contains some nice scenes and observations, but the tone is much too stilted and in terms of plot very little actually happens. The beautiful natural play of the two protagonists deserves a better film than this.

Nice quiet rippling film about parenting and taking on responsibilities. The film appears to be a documentary. Obviously, you get that impression primarily because the character of Phoenix is an audio journalist, but the film is also very pure and authentic. It is very natural acting. You can expect that from Phoenix, but the young star Woody Norman also does an excellent job.

I could hardly place the added value of the black and white images, but it is very well done. The views of the skylines of LA, Oakland, NY, Detroit and New Orleans are truly beautiful, as are the night traffic, Central Park or the small simple neighborhoods where the duo strolls.

There is a nice balance between the interviews with fascinating questions and answers and the care for little Jesse. The fact that the mother also regularly shows up is a plus and offers added value to Johnny's parenting role. Some great scenes like the handbook that Johnny has to take to empathize with Jesse and where he has to apologize.

C'mon c'mon is a tender and disarming film without a deep plot, but with the reality of life. It's the little things that stay with us, the interpersonal contacts, the quarrels, the grinning laughter moments, etc... Great!

Mike Mills makes a warm black and white film with figures and dialogues that are anything but black and white. I like that approach, because the characters and the text come out better. C'mon C'mon is about parenting and dealing with children. It is no coincidence that the main character is conducting interviews with children and he is watching over his sister's son. The film slowly unravels and then leaves you with a warm feeling. The children (except Jesse) would not have acted, but spontaneously answered the questions they received.

The film shines in its simplicity and lingers longer than you might think. Beautifully filmed with beautiful cinematography. With appropriate music by the Dessner brothers of The National.
