Seymour Krelboyne is a florist's assistant and is always unlucky. One day he manages to create a very special new flower. This flower can talk and also needs human blood to survive. It doesn't take long before the flower starts whining for food and Seymour has to somehow get human flesh. But this is not as easy as it seems.

This is quite an achievement for a film shot in 2 days, but it is not my kind of film. The dialogues are terribly dated and the characters are very stupid and annoying. Only the character of the dentist and the visitor (Nicholson) managed to entertain me, but otherwise it was not much. Furthermore, the setting is also very limited and the nagging of the plant eventually started to piss me off.

Sometimes when I haven't run a full weekend, I think on Sunday evening, 'You know, Roger Corman could have made an entire feature film during this time'. That Little Shop of Horrors from 1960 was only made in two or three days is special. You can see the film, because everything is largely shot in one location and the film contains a lot of dialogue scenes as opposed to action scenes. It is therefore not very surprising that the film was later adapted for the stage and a well-known musical was set up. One that was made into a movie version in 1986 by Frank Oz.
Despite the premise of a man-eating plant and the word Horrors in the title, there isn't a whole lot of horror about Little Shop of Horrors. It is mainly a comedy and one that sometimes leans more towards a farce. But a very nice one. The film has a lot of sympathetic actors, including a flower-eating Dick Miller. The most famous role is the small supporting role of Jack Nicholson, who subsequently appeared on the cover of numerous DVD releases of this film. This short interlude with a masochist at the dentist has nothing to do with the story, but it is funny. And that goes for the entire movie. Around the finale, despite its 70 minutes running time, the film starts to pull a bit, but the funny characters, nice smooth dialogues and fine clumsiness make the film particularly sympathetic.

Quite fun.
The Little Shop of Horrors is a surprisingly smooth and comical movie. The premise is pretty silly, and the same goes for the elaboration. But partly due to the short playing time, it remains fun. The humor is a bit bland at times, but it works. Every now and then there are some illogical things, like the one in between with a young Jack Nicholson, but that scene is just as funny, so that doesn't spoil the fun at all. I'm actually surprised that someone like Tim Burton hasn't remade this yet.
