Border posts are hell on earth. The fear of not being let through. The unfriendly treatment of officials. The paperwork must be in order, otherwise it will cause hassle again. I actually think that when you fly from one country to another, but it must be twice as annoying if you live in Palestinian territory and encounter Israeli checkpoints. 'The Present' (2020) is a social realist gem in the spirit of how 'Ladri di biciclette' (1948) addresses social injustice through the eyes of a child. Or like a Palestinian dad takes his daughter to buy mom's birthday present, but they are thwarted by checkpoints. Father and daughter are well attuned to each other, resulting in an empathetic short film about apartheid, exclusion and discriminatory treatment. Simple but effective.
