In 1984, President Reagan appointed five CIA agents as "profilers." Their mission was to gain more insight into the psyche of serial killers in the hope that this knowledge will help identify future serial killers more quickly. One of those profilers was Bill Hagmaier, and he decided to focus on Ted Bundy, even though Bundy was widely known to hate CIA agents. Screenwriter Kit Lesser drew on transcripts of Hagmaier [Elijah Wood] and Bundy [Luke Kerby]'s conversations and Hagmaier's personal memories for this intriguing psychological drama. Despite the basic static data, Sealey manages to keep this visually interesting and the strong play of the two protagonists makes this more than worth it.

Anyone expecting a film full of graphic scenes of blood and murder will be disappointed. No Man of God offers no spectacle of that order. Most of the film shows two men talking to each other in a sober room in the prison. One is Bill Hagmaier, an FBI profiler. The other is serial killer Ted Bundy. From 1984 to 1989, Hagmaier had conversations with the serial killer.

The film shows the special relationship between the profiler and his project. The initial distance and distrust with which Bundy entered the talks slowly disappears. Hagmaier comes closer to Bundy through an honest interest in his person. He approaches evil in an investigative way. He doesn't talk judgmental to Bundy. He wants to understand Bundy. He gradually becomes a confidant.

That process is interesting and produces beautiful scenes. Last but not least, the good acting is responsible for this. Elijah Wood still has something boyish about him and covers his character with a mix of (acted) naivety, unease and fascination. His verbal opponent Luke Kirby plays the role of Bundy as an apparently normal man in which evil slumbers almost invisibly, which occasionally flares up as well. The characters are interesting. The conversations are exciting.

No Man of God tells the story of Ted Bundy's last years in prison. The film barely has any action. There are hardly any shocking confessions. Still, the recording of the conversations is very interesting and very catchy. A film that encourages contemplation. Behind Ted Bundy's friendly, astute and sometimes biting facade is a madman hiding or not. And is that facade really a facade? And you can actually call Bundy a human being. To what extent is Hagmaier still an objective researcher due to his friendly attitude towards his project.

Of those things.

Nice film about an FBI analyst who has a number of interviews with the serial killer Ted Bundy. A dialogue-driven film (the film largely consists of scenes of two men in a room). However, not all dialogues are equally captivating, and towards the end it becomes more clichéd. The acting is good, but 3.5 stars would be just too much.
