During the 1930s, four Chinese secret agents are sent on a mission to the Japanese state of Manchukwo. However, their mission is in danger of falling apart when they are confronted by a traitor in the city of Harbin. This was a good, full-on spy film by Yimou Zhang. In a snow-covered setting, four communist spies have a complicated mission: to exfiltrate a man who could testify about Japanese crimes against the Chinese people. Right from the first scene, you can tell from the cyanide pills that this won't be a walk in the park. They are thwarted by a traitor and by a particularly paranoid commander who intends to cunningly eliminate them.
Well acted, especially by Yu Hewei in an impressive role, but as is often the case with Chinese films, I struggled to distinguish the characters, and that bothered me for about an hour. Moreover, it is not the easiest story to follow. That is why 3 stars, but I must admit that it was a suspenseful film that kept me on the edge of my seat more than once. The deadly game of espionage is played on the razor's edge.
