drowsy.

To me, The Novice is an ideal example of a director who is behind the wheel and wants to deliver a very good drama film that takes place in a new environment, but then has no idea how to go about it. Almost everything that should make a compelling drama effective sees in this, and then 3x as much.

However, that is almost always detrimental. Hadaway puts a lot of emphasis on intense, slow slow motion images and a great support from the music. Many scenes are characterized by a rather prominent soundtrack that feels intrusive. Editing more music under sentimental scenes is really not going to work better, and yet Hadaway fully relies on that technique.

A nice filter that is used, and as someone who does the same form of rowing as here in his spare time, I can only applaud the camera work from the boats. Fuhrman also fits very well in this film. Excellent acting performance, although Hadaway's attempts to show her character's insanity fall completely flat.

The film feels very intimate. There is a lot of emphasis on all kinds of (partly female) themes, but it always feels very intrusive, so that other elements that are just as interesting are neglected, in other cases even ignored. The Novice also works very long towards Fuhrman's madness, but once she is crazy it still feels random.

Could have been interesting, but Hadaway repeatedly focuses on scenes that aren't interesting and pushes the scenes that are into the background. The Novice is a low-resourced project that aims to achieve a lot, but it doesn't feel like it's even a moment beyond a movie with a depressing filter cast over it. I will probably not understand the characters, but I thought it was a very boring film at times.

Watched this film with growing discomfort about an aspiring newcomer who, in her unrestrained urge to achieve, destroys herself mentally and physically. Without a doubt a beautiful interpretation of Isabelle Fuhrman, but this film is not for me. I don't like these kind of creepy characters.

a terrible pusher who wants to achieve her goal at the expense of herself and others.

in the beginning still nice but as the film progresses it becomes a big mess for me, in other words very messy.

the lead actress plays her role very well.

wasn't really my movie...
