This movie unites everything I don't like about the musical genre. Artificiality, lack of a natural flow, downright embarrassing music, forced to make a song out of everything instead of dosing. Halfway through I turned off the film out of secondhand embarrassment, but I pulled myself together and watched the film through. In hindsight it might have been better if I had left it at that.

It's not often I see such a bad movie, because I read up pretty well and stuff, but here I assumed a little too easily that the Holy motors follow-up would be worth it anyway.

The lack of inspiration (or do I just mean "skill"?) with the "composers" Sparks is unimaginable by the way. I honestly have never experienced such bad music in a musical.

Be warned and ignore this film.

The musical 'Annette' by Léos Carax and Ron and Russell Mael of Sparks is a heavy, extremely bitter, crazy, magical drama. Rarely seen anything like this. Halfway through I was in danger of dropping out because I felt like this ambitious epic about failed love was sinking into its hooves, but by the end I was crushed in my seat, feeling like I'd seen something unique and sublime. I only knew of Carax's bombastic 'Les Amants du Pont Noeuf', which I thought was an experience, but not a masterpiece. Is 'Annette' really a masterpiece? It is, I think, a 'flawed masterpiece', a masterpiece with flaws. And those are perhaps the most beautiful masterpieces. Oddly enough, I was reminded of Nabokov's Lolita. Completely different story, but still: in both cases a tormented, evil main character (fantastic performance by Adam Driver) for whom you feel sympathy almost against your will, and the theme of abuse of innocence. In both cases terrible bitterness stylized into a terrible kind of dark beauty. I know the oeuvre of the eccentric American brothers Ron and Russell Mael inside out. I've been a Sparks fan all my life, and fan is a weak word. Their cynical humor, their originality, their unerring sense of theatrical exaggeration, their intelligence and eloquence are baked to my heart. With the soundtrack and script they provided for Annette, they did not disappoint me again, with beautiful songs like 'So may we start', 'We love each other so much', 'The girl from the middle of nowhere' and in particular the two heartbreaking closing songs 'Stepping back in time' and 'Sympathy for the abyss'. I will definitely go a second and probably a third time.

A musical is a bit of an adjustment in itself, but this Annette takes it a step further. It is a rollercoaster of beautiful and special scenes. The story is simple, especially by Carax's standards with Holy motors. It's really nothing more than a love story. The love story turns out to be a tragedy that plays tricks on Henry in particular.

Adam Driver plays and sings like a charm, but it is mainly Cotillard who steals the show. Their careers, but also their other social roles, are central, until Annette herself emerges and she becomes the center.

It is quite intriguing how much energy Carax has put into this film. Too much and too long as it turns out, because 140 minutes is quite demanding from the viewer...
