Jack Charlton was part of the England national team that won the 1966 FIFA World Cup. Yet he was always in the shadow of his younger brother Bobby, until in 1986, after much insistence, he accepted an offer to become the head coach of Ireland, which had been embroiled in a bitter armed struggle with England for 20 years. But Jackie's personality, his coaching style and the results of the Irish national team made him a folk hero. Even now that he is over 80 and his dementia is increasingly playing tricks on him, he remains as popular and respected as ever. And not just because of football.
