Dawn of the dead was one of Zack Snyder's best movies, you would think he could make another good zombie movie. A little hopeful, after he delivered some of the worst movies in the franchise at DC. And then some famous names and the zombie tiger in the trailer.
But Army of the Dead has rather become an Ocean's Eleven in a Las Vegas full of whacked-up zombies. Because just zombies seem to be passé. For a large part of the film the team is put together and then the heist comes with lots of shooting and little tension or lame humor. As with the DC movies, you can see that Snyder doesn't know much about editing (me neither, but I don't make big budget movies either). 153 minutes is way too long for a zombie movie. Moreover, he does not manage to bring balance in the film due to the poor editing.
Too bad, because I really like the genre. But Snyder is apparently just a director for a limited fan club who, if they shout hard enough, will get their own movie version (the infamous Snyder cut that doesn't get much better either), but the time of 300, Dawn of the dead, Watchmen and Sucker Punch is far behind us.

In my opinion, Zack Snyder is known as a director who can conjure up entertaining action films from time to time. Besides, I think Dawn of the Dead is his best film, so I was hoping for an amusing snack. That is unfortunately quite disappointing. Army of the Dead is an incredibly tame and blandly written zombie film
A slew of B-actors with flat, tough-minded characters make their way through the zombie version of Las Vegas. In any case, the zombie threat is disappointing; they mainly call t together at their alpha and hardly take any action. In addition, for the characters it is a story of 10 little niggers, but they each get their own plot, one of which is painfully unfunny and the other painfully dramatic.
Snyder barely scores points in action directing either. The first mass scene in zombie land is not too bad, afterwards it is crying with the cap on. Too little quality and also quantity, for a film of 2.5 hours. The zombies are not really worth the effort in terms of design, although an attempt has been made to differentiate them a bit from other cinema zombies. The choice to give the alphas a logical train of thought seems smart, but is poor in implementation. It also gave me a White Walker feeling.
A sequel seems obvious, and I will undoubtedly see it then, but for a good film Snyder will have to work some teeth.
