Nicholas Cage ends up literally and figuratively in No Man's Land with this pretentious, completely uninteresting SF thriller in which he has to pay for a failed bank robbery with fatalities. He is ordered by the Governor [Bill Moseley] to locate and free Bernice [Sofia Boutella] from Ghostland before the explosives in his suit blow up his noble parts. What follows is a cabinet of curiosities and a series of blurry scenes that leave you completely indifferent. Sono apparently thinks he's Fellini, Bergman and Lynch. I think so too...

Sion Sono is also looking for it in America.

Well, America. The setting is an apocalyptic mix of the American Wild West and feudal Japan, only at a time when the world is screwed up. It all starts with a bank robbery, in which Nicolas Cage stands behind the gun. We soon find him back in a desolate village with all kinds of characteristic figures where you quickly wonder what you are looking at. A Monty Python? Or real American Cult. However. Nicolas Cage seems to be needed. He must find the missing governor's daughter in exchange for his "freedom". If he doesn't, his grenade suit will go off. Not to mention how structurally and where those grenades are located.

Prisoners of Ghostland will be a very bizarre, surreal and sometimes over the top trip, with the cult B-level dripping from it. A mishmash of old apocalyptic movies and other weird combinations. The action scenes, mostly consisting of cool sword battles, are nice and bloody and like a usual Japanese element: squirt the blood out with the ditto hissing sound.

The movie wasn't a high-flyer, but it was entertaining. Nicolas Cage plays a nice cool role here and his charm never seems to fade.

I enjoyed myself.

3.5*

Creating culture.

The beginnings of Prisoners of the Ghostland are promising. There's style and there's a bold script. The first fifteen minutes seem to be heading for a special viewing experience. Nothing could be further from the truth unfortunately. At least not in a positive way. Although this imaginative arty-farty film is something different than usual, it doesn't get really strong anywhere. Even the funny Troma feeling that the atmosphere often evokes does not last.

Nicolas Cage undoubtedly had fun and the beautiful dancer Sofia Boutella is a real eye-catcher, but that's about it. Every time you expect a psychedelic, violent musical, the droppings are withdrawn again, for example. Bill Moseley is entertaining but also caught up in a Bassie & Adriaan-esque trip, where his buddy Rob Zombie is sorely missed.

Because nowhere does it get creepy. But not funny or exciting or interesting either. The fight scenes at the end are even a bit weak and many a dialogue exchange is reminiscent of an amateur theatrical performance in Tietsjerkstradeel, where the local shop assistants and municipal officials like to immerse themselves in Shakespeare in the evenings on a stage. Nothing wrong with that, but to capture on film is also about.

Because even though this turd is wrapped in glittery paper and served on a bed of confetti, it smells just as bad as the other excrement in cinemaland. It seems that there is a lack of passion among the makers. And although this colorful spectacle is daring, the viewing experience is extremely boring. You don't always have to force everything to create. Cult, for example, should be created by accident. Not because it is necessary.
