A beautiful animation, but it comes across as rather clichéd. The theme is certainly moving, of course, but I had hoped it would gain more depth in the animation. It drifts a bit from the struggling parents to the cat to the child to the school... A short film like this can certainly be atmospheric without really having a clear storyline. But here, it relies a little too much on the subject to score. Or at least, that is how it comes across to me.

Ouch, this hits hard. The inability of a father and a mother to accept the senseless loss of their daughter who died young. 'If Anything Happens I Love You' (2020) works so well because the austere drawing style follows the dream logic of picture books and thereby radiates something of youthful innocence itself. But instead of reading something aloud to a child snuggling safely between warm blankets, it is actually a short film about a cold societal problem like school shootings. That contrast between the uninhibited child and the raw reality is heartbreaking. I can imagine, however, that this resonates less with Dutch viewers because—unlike, for example, 'Father & Daughter' (2000) by Michael Dudok de Wit—it is so specifically linked to an American context.
