Good film about a few musicians who get together in a studio with the blues singer Ma Rainey to record a few songs. Clearly based on a play (the film takes place almost entirely in the music studio). Nicely dressed and some good monologues performed by an excellent Viola Davis and Chadwick Boseman. The tension between the characters is also well developed at times, but as a whole it sometimes lacks some direction.

As with the film adaptation of August Wilson's play Fences I am not entirely happy with this film. There is no shortage of emotions, as befits a film about the blues. However, the mutual squabbling eventually started to annoy me and that also applies to Ma Rainey's irritating behavior. That will be quite true to life, but I prefer to cherish my fond memories of other roles by Viola Davis, without a doubt one of the best actresses of the current era.

It is also a pity that relatively little attention is paid to the music itself. I think that's a missed opportunity.

What a class apart this Viola Davis is. Not for the first time she plays the tiles of the roof. Here with an enormously energetic role from the primal mother of the blues, Ma Rainey. A dominant and stubborn woman as it turns out. It produces some nice funny moments like that incident in traffic or when her manager has to beg her to sign the contract or when she stands up for the payment of one of her band members.

But Chadwick is also doing fine here. Too bad we won't see him on the big screen again. Otherwise an atmospheric print of Chicago in the 1920s. However, I would have liked to see more music interludes than the endless nagging discussions.
