Meh. A mysterious sci-fi with a little bit of horror. The story itself is nicely thought out but it was all just a bit too unbelievable for me. I didn't like the cast, which also performs moderately. It's all just not good enough, therefore not sufficient.

Intriguing mysterious drama with thriller and horror elements. Well played by a cast that is largely unknown to me and smoothly filmed. Here and there also a number of quite creepy moments. At a certain point you understand what is going on and the tension is partly over, but even after that the film remains captivating. The somewhat weak open ending was not necessary for me, but all in all a fine film.

Director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour and co-writer Stephen Herman make a valiant attempt to bring an unpredictable and complex science fiction thriller to life, but reach a dead end when it comes to atmosphere and tension. Mamoudou Athie plays a sympathetic lead role, but certainly lacks a certain degree of emotion and expression during the more emotional moments, as if he found it uncomfortable to be part of the production. Osei-Kuffour does a reasonable job in terms of visual inventions, although Black Box lacks a certain degree of energy. The unpredictable progression of the story and the innovative concept provide the main plus points, but ultimately the film does not evoke enough emotion to remain memorable afterwards.
