Not very convincing. The film is set in the 70s, but sometimes I also had the idea that the film was made during that time. Visually very poor with stale humor and the acting tended to be a bit theatrical - in any case, people often did things that I didn't understand. Really scripted to move the story forward. The film does give a nice picture of the time and past the halfway point also something of warmth, with some nice shots now and then (especially in the desert). And some scenes are really fun, especially around the cleaning up of that movie. The criticism of China can be called striking, but processed somewhat simplistic. Anyway, the movie is 104 minutes long and felt much shorter. The pacing is really good and I didn't get bored, despite the shortcomings in the film. So a decent enough. 3.0*.

Fine film by Yimou Zhang. Not to the level of some of his earlier masterpieces, but very successful anyway. A film that mainly revolves around two individuals, a young girl and an old man, who keep getting in each other's way when a film roll is stolen. The intention is different for both, but they do have their tenacity in common.

The film is a bit repetitive at times, but occasionally stands out. If not for the beautiful images from the desert, then for the very beautiful scene in the atmospheric cinema where everyone is crowded in both directions of the film screen watching a film. A film that does not shy away from the ode of the silver screen.

A film that further criticizes censorship. Not that it was all that explicit, but apparently enough to delay the film's premiere in Europe.

Occasionally I felt the warmth of "Nuovo Cinema Paradiso" when I saw that operator busy with his celluloid tapes and equipment and also when the audience in the room went crazy or not, but the comic accent predominates, even above the political, social criticism that sometimes seeps through in this enjoyable film by Yimou Zhang.
