Partly fascinating, partly frustrating. This raw, intelligently crafted revenge film has a lot of atmosphere, strong dialogues and excellent acting, but the script occasionally leaves something to be desired in terms of content. In my opinion, the motivation of the main character is lacking. Nevertheless, visually impressive and all in all a special, if uncomfortable, viewing experience.

A film that occasionally drowns in pretentious drivel, but also knows how to hit hard. A bit Lars von Trier-lite. The irony is that the long stretching of scenes is both its strength and its weakness. On the one hand, you have long, ''weighty'' conversations that overshoot their mark and all the visual Arthouse 101 tricks at your disposal. On the other hand, Dusty Mancinelli shows his teeth a few times and then cuts away in a cowardly manner. I think that is seriously underrated here; how often do we see similar situations in genre films where the effect is much less? Gulp-gulp-gone. And what is that due to? Purely due to editing (or in this case the ''lack'' of it). What is the 'norm': the murder (explicit), cut, B-roll footage of location, cut to suggestive shot of body in cooler. The process afterwards is therefore skipped in large steps, or in other cases summarized in a short montage with little time to let it sink in. Dusty has estimated this very well and knows by simply showing and hearing everything step by step for long enough, to leave a notable impression.

A combination of genres and a collection of all sorts of ideas that unfortunately do not come together convincingly in Violation, partly due to the unnecessarily complex approach of director duo Dusty Mancinelli and Madeleine Sims-Fewer. The latter plays the leading role and does a pretty convincing job within that, the failure of this film is absolutely not due to the cast members. The whole thing is regularly quite atmospheric and the clashes between the characters are solidly portrayed, but in the end it all takes far too long and tells rather little for such a length. The story is shuffled into different parts, but without an effective goal. The content is not that convincing, which makes it seem to betray that the makers themselves did not really know how to present this in an interesting way. Despite a number of beautiful images, this whole thing is mainly uninteresting and disappears from the retina.
