The Drover's Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson plot

In 1893, the heavily pregnant Molly Johnson lives in the outback with her children. They try to survive in the harsh Australian landscape after her husband left to herd sheep. One day, she finds a chained fugitive Aboriginal named Yakada wounded in her yard. An unlikely bond develops between the two. Molly is soon targeted by the suspicious law enforcement officer Nate Clintoff, who sends a cop after her. The meeting between Molly, the cop and Yakada results in a tragic chain of events in which Molly becomes a symbol of feminism and anti-racism.

Purcell triumphs as writer, director and lead actor in this fascinating western about Molly Johnson [Purcell], the wife of a sheep herder [Matt Klarie] who has been away from home for three months. Molly Johnson is heavily pregnant when London-based Nate Klintoff [Sam Reid], who is tasked with maintaining law and order in Everton, Australia, warns her about a black man who recently murdered a neighboring family. Shortly thereafter, Yadaka [Rob Collins], a half-white, half-indigenous man whose description matches that of the killer, appears on her property. This intelligent, multi-layered western with a female perspective premiered six months before Jane Campion’s multi-award-winning The Power of the Dog and is every bit as good. Based on Purcell’s 2019 play in which she also played the title role.

Molly Johnson is not a pussy to be handled lightly. She has to be, because she is on her own with her children out there in the dangerous Australian Outback. She has to keep things running and make sure that no looters are running havoc.

Beautiful shots of the grey dangerous jungle cross the screen and are worth watching. Molly Johnson is anything but lucky and this historical drama also radiates that. Not a true story, but a filmed play. That can be called quite successful. The inferior position of women is strongly emphasized and the age-old theme of racism soon raises its head. Perhaps both too heavy to carry the weight of the film, although it was certainly bitter reality at the time.

At times a little too little verve or power to upgrade the film. Solid without a doubt.
