Lick the Star (1998)

Sofia Coppola's real debut (Bed, Bath and Beyond from 1996) can no longer be found, but fortunately there is still Lick the Star. A year before the director would break through with The Virgin Suicides, she immediately delivers something in her characteristic style with this short. In beautiful black and white she shows the life cycle of a group of teenage girls. The idolization of Flowers in the Attic, the following behavior, the destruction of the reputation of 'inferior' girls, the fall of the queen bee ... Not everything is perfect, but it is interesting to see how Coppola is already taking the first steps in this towards her thoroughbred features. Nice short film though. Especially in beautiful black and white, nice and gritty and grainy and rich in contrast (especially that dark lipstick). Seeertje is okay, the story that contains a lot is actually just too much for this length, which is not convincing. But as a finger exercise this is a nice thing. 3.5*.
