A film that I experience almost like an adventure film, on an Indiana Jones-esque journey of discovery: the camera wanders through the corridors, staircases, and rooms filled with thousands of books, manuscripts, newspapers, paintings, sculptures, etchings, lithographs, medals, geographical maps, and artifacts, transforming the Parisian National Library into a mysterious labyrinth. That one specific book we follow (which, incidentally, turns out to be fictional, with a photo of the beautiful Lucia Bosè on the cover) almost becomes the film's hero, from whose perspective we follow the plot. The choreography of the librarians and errand boys who navigate the maze emphasizes how self-contained this world is. Every day, this glutton goes through 200 kilos of paper, with 3 million new items added every century, and all of it (this is 1956) is recorded in old-school card indexes… So there's more than enough to see for the film buff who started out by noting down every film they've seen on an 8x13 index card, a collection that's now absolutely impossible to digitize. I've seen this short film many times now (on my StudioCanal Blu-ray of The Last Year at Marienbad), and I still can't get enough of the details, the camera movements, and the captivating journey through the bowels of the library. Cinematic lyricism of the highest order.
