I think, like most people I imagine, Flatlife was the first thing I learned about Jonas Geirnaert. That makes sense, since in 2004 he was just a student who had completed a graduation project and suddenly had success with it. Today, Geirnaert is an indispensable part of the Flemish media with, among other things, the script of De Dag, work for De Ideale Wereld and countless appearances in programs such as De Slimste Mens ter Wereld, not to mention Neveneffects, Basta and Willy's & Marjetten to remain silent.

So it's a long run to say that it is actually interesting to see to what extent Geirnaert has grown today. The young guy who called at the Cannes Film Festival not to vote for Bush anymore is less political today, but in my memory there was also a lot more spirit in Flatlife. Some nice ideas, but the animation itself is poor and that tune also gets on the nerves in the long run. Then I actually much prefer his later work such as Kabouter Wesley. Also strange that one of the figures in the apartment so closely resembles Boerke by Pieter De Poortere, a kind of ode to Geirnaert? No idea, but it certainly made a lot less impression than 16 years ago. Geirnaert may have grown, but apparently so have I (fortunately)...

2.5*

A beautiful business card made by Jonas Geirnaert who immediately ended up at Cannes with this Flatlife upon graduating from KASK in Ghent. There is still a lot of growing to do, but it already has its own style and a film with the necessary humor. Simple story of 4 flats, but still fascinating enough with a pinch of humor.

Both film and director are well known to me. However, Flatlife has been forgotten, so I had not seen it yet. The short had an impact at the time, certainly on Geirnaert's career, which has since been frequently performed on TV, not least in comedic satirical programs.

However, the film itself disappointed me a bit. A bit monotonous despite the limited playing time. Not incredibly funny, but I did get a glimpse of everyday life in an apartment block where you always have to take others into account. Annoyances quickly crop up.
