Definitely a classic, and one I should have seen at least once. Many scenes felt familiar. For a short film, there are quite a few repetitive songs, which made it a bit tedious at times.

But this short film nevertheless laid the foundation for many other legendary battles between Popeye and Sinbad, often with Olive Oyl as the central target (although I had a feeling the bad guy was called Bluto). It was a clever commercial move, by the way, to use spinach as a symbol to counter the American recession of the 1930s. Meat had become too expensive for many, and "iron-hardy" and inexpensive vegetables like spinach were a viable alternative for the population.

Visually, the short film isn't always great, but the battle between the two powerhouses remains legendary. It was great to see it again!

Here you see the animation style that would flourish in the 1930s and 1940s. However, you can still clearly see that it dates back to 1936. It was nominated for an Academy Award, where it lost to Disney. Unlike other animated characters like Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny, or Droopy, Popeye's animated films are less legendary, and it's mainly the characters themselves that remain in people's memory. This animation parodies the story from the Arabian Nights. It's nicely done here and there.
