Shortly after serving a prison sentence, the unstable Troy [Steve Zahn] 'frees' his daughter Joe [Sasha Knight] from the clutches of his ex-wife Sally [Jillian Bell]. In flashbacks we discover the real reason for Troy's desperate act and what the exact reason was for his prison sentence. Zahn is perfectly cast and plays one of the best roles of his life in this family drama disguised as an adventure film and screenwriter/director Kerrigan approaches a current and still controversial subject with compassion and respect. Too bad about the contrived ending.

Reasonable film about a man going through a divorce and taking his son on a camping holiday. By means of flashbacks the underlying relationships between father/mother/child become clear. And this is certainly well worked out and the cast does a great job. However, at a certain point it all becomes a bit too dramatic.

A beautiful view of the bond between father and daughter. Touching to see. The contrast with the mother was perhaps exaggerated, but such contrasts ensure that the film was spiced up. It certainly bothered me less.

Of course, the daughter's feelings are the cause of the misunderstanding, the arguments and the conflict within the family. Fortunately, the film is about more than just that. A nice survival road movie presented itself.

The narrative structure was done with regular flashbacks, sometimes a bit redundant, but the editing was good. Well developed and well acted. Great!
