The Trip to Greece plot

When Odysseus left Troy, it took him ten years to return home to Ithaca. Steve and Rob have just six days on their own personal odyssey. Along the way, they argue about tragedy and comedy, astronomy and biology, myths, history, democracy and the meaning of life. Meanwhile, they visit various locations including the Temple of Apollo at Delphi, the ancient Agora of Athens and the ancient theater of Epidaurus.

Nice film in which the two friends this time make a trip to Greece. With this fourth part you know exactly what to expect, and that is what you get (and you can take that both positively and negatively). Entertaining dialogues, nice imitations, delicious dishes and beautiful images of the country. Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are perfectly attuned to each other.

After culinary tours of England, Italy and Spain, friends and colleagues Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon now undertake a tour of a number of picturesquely situated restaurants in Greece. The basic formula remains unchanged: the two comedians talk humorously about life and try to outdo each other with imitations. Classics such as Roger Moore, Anthony Hopkins and Brydon's inevitable "Small Man in a Box" return, but Winterbottom provides this film with a subtle dramatic undertone that was missing from the previous films. It works and as a result this is fortunately more than a repetition of an (admittedly highly entertaining) formula. Coogan and Brydon may well be on their way to definitively manifesting themselves as the new version of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby!

The years are taking their toll on Coogan and Brydon - or perhaps Winterbottom. What started during Trip to Spain continues in this part, a slowly creeping drama, a maturity that takes hold of the carefree and thoughtless duo. Very human and very recognizable perhaps, but the downside is that they are also dealing with the same problems as all of us, and that is not what I watch a film for. There will be a fifth part, I hope they can pull themselves out of this pit. It is still a nice film, that is not it. But the spark of the first part is missing a bit.

And the beautiful images of the locations feel a bit like you are on holiday yourself, in the most luxurious and beautiful places in Greece. Never been, maybe I should catch up on that.
