De Schuldmachine plot

In the Netherlands, one in five young people has problematic debts. The government, such as the tax authorities or the CJIB, is often their largest creditor. The documentary shows how problematic debt traps young people. Based on the debt files of three young adults from Amsterdam-Zuidoost, the film clearly shows the importance of a personal approach.

Camiel Zwart follows a number of young people who, partly due to bad luck, partly through unwise choices in the debt machine, and makes it clear that the system that supposedly helps them to get out of debt is so corrupted by bureaucracy and commerce that it almost impossible to get out. What's the point of increasing debt if it makes the debtor homeless, when he has to be registered as a resident of a municipality to get some kind of compensation? Black speaks with victims of the system, who try to remain positive despite all the misery, but also speaks with people who play an important role in causing and/or solving the enormous problems caused by the debt machine. A harrowing, but excellently researched documentary.
