El Agente Topo plot

"It's never too late to become a spy."

Sergio is a Chilean spy. At least, he gets this role after a casting session hosted by Detective Romulo, a private detective who needs a credible mole to infiltrate a retirement home. Romulo's client, a concerned daughter of one of the residents, suspects her mother is being mistreated and hires the detective to find out what's really going on. But Sergio is 83, not 007, and struggles with contemporary technologies and espionage techniques. He is, however, an enthusiastic student, for whom this espionage action is a welcome distraction after the death of his wife. As Sergio gathers information, he grows closer to various residents of the retirement home and realizes that the looming truth beneath the surface is not what was suspected.

Great premise of the film where the opening scenes of the film immediately threw me into the film. I was really looking forward to it. Amusing, clumsy and funny when the right applicant was sought for the assignment. Could have easily lasted another five minutes or so longer.

The humorous undertone makes way in the nursing home for a more dramatic, entertaining and warm film in which the life of the residents in the nursing home comes more to the fore. The characters and their worries or ailments really come out beautifully, which made this film move me. I have a thing for old people anyway, so that was fine.

The approach is also great, where you use a kind of documentary (although it is not quite that) to bring the right message in the right way. Great! Between 3.5* and 4.0*.

Indeed, it gives the impression of balancing between documentary and fiction, but that is not a problem at all because Sergio guides us through the life of a home for the elderly and actually grows into a kind of counselor and helper for those old people, each with their own degree of declining alertness, mania, memory loss and, what he concludes, above all a painful loneliness.

I think that's where the truth lies.

Sometimes moving, sometimes playful and funny, a successful and entertaining film.

An Oscar submission, I hear.

Beautiful…..I am speechless. This happens to so many people, the loneliness and being abandoned in old age. Nice idea to put a retired private detective among these elderly people to keep an eye on things. Sergio is a sympathetic elderly, but still smooth man, who quickly steals everyone's hearts. I do wonder, were those elderly people actors, extras or were they just themselves? Maybe watching this film will give some (grand)children a push to visit their (grand)parents more often?
