You Don't Nomi plot

Paul Verhoeven's story about the excesses of Las Vegas, 'Showgirls', was not well received in 1995 to say the least. Since then, however, the film has taken on a second life, as a cult classic. Several musicals have been devoted to it, generations of drag queens have used the sometimes hilarious dialogue, and drag queen Peaches Christ has become famous for her massively attended reruns. She speaks, along with many others.

Entertaining, entertaining documentary is more than a comprehensive analysis of Showgirls, still regarded by many as one of the worst films of the 1990s and a huge critical and commercial flop for Paul Verhoeven and screenwriter Joe Eszterhas. McHale often makes creative use of images from other Verhoeven films, partly to use them as a background for a summary of facts or statistics, but mainly to negate much of the criticism. As a result, we see that explicit nudity, rape and even dog food are motifs in Verhoeven's oeuvre. Especially the comparison with the - to Verhoeven's understandable surprise - multiple award-winning Elle is fascinating in that respect. Showgirls has meanwhile been embraced in the gay scene, for whom this is the final piece in a trilogy that started with Valley of the Dolls and Mommie Dearest. A visual feast, a must for film lovers and a good reason for everyone to enjoy the film themselves.

I haven't seen Showgirls and I've only seen a few films by Verhoeven anyway, but judging by those few films I have the impression that his films are undervalued so I'm open to the fact that Showgirls definitely has quality and is therefore not the worst film of all time is. Or rather: that the film is both very bad and brilliantly good because his films and especially these seem to be a typical example of camp , so 'so bad that it becomes good'. Or perhaps even better: postmodern, in which Verhoeven does not try to make a good – that is to say: a realistic and well-constructed – film at all, but consciously hyper-realistic by immersing the viewer in mere spectacle, for whatever reason the tone is constantly changing (hybrid style) and we are always surprised by a fragmentary structure, with which Verhoeven holds up a hysterical distorting mirror to the American culture, which is already focused on spectacle. In terms of theme, there is therefore the exaggerated violence, but certainly also the sex, which certainly also applies to Wilde's statement: “Everything in the world is about sex except sex. Sex is about power.”. Behind the distorting mirror is such a cynical reflection on contemporary culture. The Dutch director in particular shows in this way where the American Hollywood tradition must end, what its apotheosis is.

The documentary is not as analytical as my review, but rather imitates Verhoeven's own style in a spectacle and unconscious motives that they try to articulate. Bad? Maybe, but also entertaining and just as well food for thought.

Entertaining, often very funny documentary about the second life, as a cult classic, of Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls. Proponents and opponents are given ample opportunity to speak (Verhoeven himself unfortunately only in archive recordings); a lot of attention is also paid to the musicals that are based on the commercial and artistic flop. It will never be my favorite film, but the contagious enthusiasm of those involved has made me want to put on Showgirls again.
