Nice action movie, but nothing more than that. The story is unnecessarily complex and as the film progresses very simple. The film also starts a bit awkward and is a bit of a drag. Fortunately, the film picks up after a quarter and as a viewer you are treated to nice but bloody action scenes with some flying limbs. The acting is decent, although the lead actress occasionally struggles with certain scenes. Visually, the film is top notch. Dark, gray atmosphere and Manga-like scenes are beautifully combined into a tight whole. 3.0

Half/Half.

The setting in Sao Paulo itself is nice, and there are a few very good locations. But the images are not really great with a few nice exceptions, Masumi is not very convincing as a yakuza princess and Rhys-Meyers was also not very good as the laconic hero without memory. And the ending is a bit weak, nice that there is an opening for a sequel, but it also feels rather unfinished. Perhaps worst of all, the evil Muramasa gets a little too few evils to do.

Then that counts to me as a somewhat unfulfilled promise, a good attempt, a nice exercise but without the result you actually hope for. Maybe a sequel will fix that.

More action than thriller. I hadn't seen a Japanese sword and fighting movie for a long time and after this one I can handle it for quite some time. Nothing special, no surprising plot and acting; just action. Sufficient for me.
