A destructive drama at its core, very dark / melancholy in style and tone. In a year in which there are few highlights within the genre, this is a nice surprise that applies both in terms of content (with the metaphorical role of dementia, especially the ending) and in terms of cinematography and sound design. The type of horror film that, despite all the typical genre tropes, is not yet so hackneyed that it is counterproductive. But for how long? Incidentally, Dementia (2015) is another relatively recent film with a similar theme.

Well what can you say about this. I can agree with many reviews, but maybe I was too tired, because I just don't get it.
It is okay if a film tries to be ambiguous and often contains metaphors. It just didn't really interest me that much with this film and that's why I got a bit lost at the end.
The film starts very atmospheric and the mystery surrounding the demented grandmother is portrayed in a nice way. The film is exciting at times and it doesn't get bogged down in the standard horror clichés. Only I got the feeling that the film really tries to be different (interesting) in the third act, when there are already enough films in this genre that also have a double layer.
The ending got more and more blurry and the movie just lost me. The granddaughter finds in the storage room above a corridor to another room behind the walls of the house, or is it a reflection of the house? Then the grandma gets crazier and crazier and the three all end up in that part of the house, where the grandma eventually completely peels off her skin / has her daughter peeled off and a kind of black troll about it and the daughter also starts black spots to get. What on earth do they mean by this? What is this a metaphor for? Dementia? So why does the daughter get such spots? Why is she turning into an old man? What does this have to do with dementia or loss of identity?

So many questions, so much vagueness and the film would have done better if it hadn't wanted to be so interesting at the end. Too bad, because it ruins an atmospheric first hour.

2.5*

Good.

As far as I'm concerned, Relic is one of the better horror films from 2020. A year in which horror films triumphed, but did not often really convince. There were certainly good titles, but also less good titles. Relic is another very nice film from the corona year.

It is noticeable that the corona epidemic means that the directors have to make their films a bit smaller, but also creates opportunities for creativity. Director James seizes these opportunities with both hands and puts down a small, but fine horror film that knows how to captivate from start to finish.

The slow pace and largely lack of horror doesn't make Relic a film for everyone, but if you can get over that, you'll be treated to some nice surprises during the last 30 minutes. The end of this film certainly managed to surprise me, and also shows that creativity from the director's chair has not yet died out completely.

Visually it looks nice. The look of the house looks good and the furnishings are also appropriate. Combined with solid camera work and strong cinematography, there is plenty to experience visually during Relic. It's a pity that James alone can never really make the film exciting or mysterious, because even though the plot remains fairly mysterious, there is just too little puzzle work left to the viewer.

It also lacks some really strong scenes that can fully pull the film up, but for what it is it's nice. Not that it gets very scary or emotional, but the acting is nice and the course is interesting enough. Sometimes just a bit too slow, but otherwise not too much to complain about Relic. A unique ending (a pity that there is little appreciation for it) also ensures that this film manages to transcend its peers. Nice discovery, recommended for the enthusiast.

Wicked creepy intro, so much wrong with the scene, emotionally and physically. We have a situation we're dealing with s the story begins to develop, and I'm unsure of the status of a main character.

The atmosphere at the place is off, and hard to describe, but off nonetheless.

This place just gets weirder and wider, and it now seems that something is truly off with the property that our characters are inhabiting at the moment.

This has turned into a nightmare scenario for our supporting characters, and it only seems to be getting worse moment by moment. Such an Absolutely, Horrorifically Beautiful story. Devastatingly Unique Film.
