Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator plot

Bikram Choudhury was the founder of popularizing yoga in North America and around the world. Choudhury, an Indian immigrant based in Beverly Hills, was a born entertainer. He was known for his clothes, nothing more than a black speedo and a Rolex, and his teaching style that was punctuated by spontaneous singing. He built a franchise with hundreds of Bikram studios around the world. Filmmaker Eva Orner follows Choudhury from the 1970s to his scandals over rape and sexual harassment allegations in more recent years.

Modern documentary.

They're created using a simple template. It's clear this was another film with a mission. Don't expect any transparency or honesty in that regard; this documentary goes for easy effect and gradually delivers a few "grand" revelations.

These are immediately made somewhat more questionable by a few crude statements from the interviewees, which completely miss the point of some undoubtedly legitimate accusations. Fortunately, I didn't know much about the man or the yoga scene, so the informative segments were still somewhat watchable.

Oh well, I didn't expect much from it either. You can dream up this kind of documentary these days, including the note at the end that several people who could have offered a response didn't want to be interviewed. If this is the standard, you don't have to wonder why...

1.5*

An entertaining but very one-sided and straightforward documentary about the once-popular but now-maligned yoga guru Bikram Choudhury. The documentary is certainly revealing, but because Choudhury himself doesn't speak, except in archive footage, the design and execution are limited. We know right away that this man is wrong; the nearly hour and a half that follows adds little to that.

Bikram Choudhury, born in India, immigrated to the US in the 1970s. There, he started a yoga program consisting of 26 postures and two breathing exercises. The program was so successful that Bikram invited students to take a teacher training course so they could start their own Bikram Yoga studios. In the 2010s, a total of seven women filed lawsuits against Bikram, alleging sexual abuse and rape, among other things. Bikram's engaging personality, powerful position, and ability to manipulate (evident in authentic footage) suggest there are many more victims, but also explain the fear many feel about speaking out against Bikram. Omer makes a clear distinction between Bikram and his method.
