The Way Back is a film that takes the well-known route and is not surprising in terms of story. Ben Affleck is surprising. He does very well in this film. So good that he keeps you watching the film. I don't often turn off films, but I probably would have done so without his input.

Nice film about a man with an alcohol problem who starts coaching a basketball team he once played for. Although the emphasis is more on the main character, this is otherwise a fairly standard sports drama with a predictable progression. Certainly not bad and the film is also entertaining, but it has all been seen before. Ben Affleck is convincing. Just under 3.5 stars.

Ben Affleck has a beard and a paunch for his role as Jack Cunningham, once a huge basketball talent who, to everyone's surprise, decided to drop the ball. His relationship with Angela [Janina Gavankar] ended a year ago and since then Jack has been drowning his sorrows at home and in the bar with liters of beer. But then he gets a call from his old school who are urgently looking for a replacement for their recovering basketball coach. Will he do it or won't he? Will he be able to lead the woefully underperforming team to the play-offs? And will he be able to give up his drinking for good? Anyone who thinks they can answer 'yes' to one of these questions may enjoy it a little more, but connoisseurs of the genre have been warned. They might enjoy drawing up an A4 sheet of clichés.
