Beautifully subdued drama with often picturesque images. The directors keep it small and mainly follow the adventures of Higinio who is in hiding in his own house. It is sad to see how much General Franco's opponents have suffered under his reign of terror. Higinio is initially cheerful and hopeful, but gradually falls into lethargy. His wife Rosa is also near despair at some point. Excellent performance by Antonio de la Torre who ages credibly, compliments to the grime department. The moral: if war breaks out, don't rely on your neighbors.

Still a very remarkable film during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930s. No one could be trusted, least of all your neighbors. The click culture was rampant and everyone was being watched. A door that was suddenly closed more than usual, a piece of clothing that did not belong there that was washed, nothing escaped the spies.

It is in that context that Higinio went into hiding at home. He wasn't the only one, although he didn't know it at the time. It must have been terrible to be locked up in your own house for 30 years. At times some attention is paid to the psychological impact of the event. The resentment with the partner, the loneliness, the consequences of the chosen path. What I found most moving was the son's accusations, after so many years.

Good acting and at times an excellent setting with claustrophobic impressions. The small streets in the village were also beautiful, especially when Higinio escaped the guardia civil.
