I was fine with this Eastwood. Where the strength lies is the tranquility with which the story is told.

You get a great idea of how Jewell is put together, a role played well by Paul Walter Hauser. Without these insights into his character you can just fine with the thinking of the FBI.

Eastwood has also taken a smart approach by keeping the film small and focusing mainly on Jewell and his mother. With Kathy Bathes you also have a topper in your hands and it can hardly go wrong. The personal impact on this family is palpable and that's what it's all about. Where other films try to go bigger in these kinds of themes that have gripped a country.

There are some exaggerated and lost characters such as Wilde, who undermine the power that Eastwood is trying to achieve by focusing on Jewell. A lot of time is invested in Jewell, which means that her and Owen's character are less well represented. This while they do play a significant role in the film.

A mixed bag in the end. On the one hand, Eastsood focuses well on Jewell and his mother's personal experience of this drama. On the other hand, he doesn't know how to deal with the other sides of this story, the FBI and the media.

3.5*

“Where I come from, when the government says someone's guilty, that's how you know they're innocent.”

Nice movie again from Eastwood. Richard Jewell is a man with a story that Eastwood loves. One man and his struggles against government services, a personal tragedy, a bittersweet ending, etc. Eastwood has been slowing down in his films in recent years and letting the acting and story do the work. Eastwood doesn't dramatize it all and actors like Hauser, Bates, Rockwell and Hamm also manage to keep it believable. Only the subplot around Wilde and Hamm is a bit unrealistic and seems to come from another movie.

One of the better movies of this year. You have to be back in the US to find people who have already been convicted before their guilt is proven. However, Jewell had everything to be a hero, finding the bag of explosives during the centennial celebration of the Olympic Games in Atlanta, and immediately took action to get everyone to safety. It took only one well-aimed news article, based on an FBI leak , to make him a prime suspect. The film tells the story of the stations of the cross that this somewhat naive man (and his mother) had to undergo for almost three months. Apparently the FBI isn't much use either; big men with small dicks who don't lie awake to violate someone's civil rights and actually do anything but do their job as they should be. Great acting by Hauser and Rockwell who upgrade the film with their interplay; good idea to put two lesser known, but no less talented actors at the helm because it turned out to be a brilliant film.
