It took me a while to muster the courage to write the review of Countdown. It's been a while since I've seen such a bad movie during a press screening. Bad reviews are generally the most fun to write, but Countdown is just one movie I wanted to forget ASAP.

There are plenty of films with the same kind of premise. Just look at the Final Destination series. The fact that there is now an app that can map out your death exactly is a small but interesting switch. However, novice director Justin Dec (Dec has mainly worked in the TV world) makes nothing special of it. A more boring performance could not have been possible. Nothing is spared from ignorance.

The script is completely unbelievable. For example, allegations of sexual harassment at work are not heard back. The acting never forgets the implausible script and visually the film is as generic and bare as can be. In terms of horror, you won't see anything you haven't seen before. The gore is limited, the kills only appear very briefly and the end is yet another stand-off that we are not waiting for. The far too obvious twist can't change that at all.

Even more shocking than the quality of Countdown is the fact that it just got a theatrical release. There are so many good films that don't make it past the festival circuit. As soon as you have a horror film that is in line with the popular Final Destination and an app as the main character, you are apparently baked.

Surprisingly underrated work in my opinion. The concept was really intriguing and the tension was very palpable for the first few minutes of the film. This is something I don't often see in a horror movie. So for that reason alone this one gets 4*. A number of separate choices have been made to add comic elements. Still, I never had the feeling that it was really going to be a comedy film. The whole thing remains serious.

The actors also do quite well and the lead actress is a beautiful appearance. I thought there was a subplot about sexual harassment at work a bit forced. There is also a version of the Countdown app in the Google Play store. I tried it once and I only have 171 days left to live. Let's make the best of it haha.

By the book

Every now and then I feel like a nice simple horror. One with a predictable course of which I know in advance what to expect. Countdown meets these expectations as long as you as a viewer don't expect more from it. You've seen variations on a story like this countless times before and the director isn't exactly concerned with avoiding clichés. For example, the help of a priest who is invoked. As long as I can remember, this has been a regular fixture in many horror films, even if the director tries to give it a comedic twist here. This doesn't prevent Countdown from feeling tired at times, but again, sometimes we might all feel like a predictable movie.

Besides the fun premise, I especially found the build-up in some scenes, like the scene with Matt in the toilet and a later scene with a night light quite effective. It is therefore a pity that the final is a bit out of control by showing too much again, which completely ebbs away the tension. The power of the imagination is hard to beat, as is shown here again when the Demon Ozhin who seems to have stepped straight out of an old PS2 game, makes a full appearance several times. Unfortunately I often see this with titles from this genre. The build-up is fine, but the finale often fails to maintain that tension. And that's a shame.

3.0*
