Babyteeth plot
The seriously ill teenager Milla falls for drug dealer Moses, a real nightmare for her parents. Through this new relationship, Milla finds her meaning for life again, although she gets more and more lost. I can't directly call this a comedy, all the more a drama. But .... certainly not a bad drama. For me, the film had to rely mainly on MIlla with her pretty nice wigs. I especially liked that green wig. It was obvious that there was a lot of tragedy involved. I thought the positive thing about this film was that even though Milla was terminally ill, you didn't see a doctor or hospital. That would really make the film drepi. "As long as I live I try to make the best of it". That's what Milla seemed to say. Well, what else can you do. I really liked the last scene on the beach.

My first post on Moviemeter, and immediately for one hell of a movie!
A girl slowly succumbing to a debilitating illness, a boy addicted to drugs and medication, a psychiatrist who treats his own wife (never a good idea), and a mother who wanders through the house every night in a daze. And all this in an Australia full of green-blue parrots and drowning wasps in swimming pools. The whole thing evoked memories of the Please Like Me series, which also takes place in Australia. Kind of the same atmosphere. I can also imagine that a younger person is completely blown away by this. The whole film breathes recognition.
I only found the intertitles quite disturbing at times. Some scenes would have been stronger if it hadn't been for a funny three-word phrase that popped up. But maybe I'm missing a meaning here

Both puppy love and goodbye to life. Or how Milla (Eliza Scanlen) goes through turbulent developments in 'Babyteeth' (2019) when she has to combine her first boyfriend with a drastic chemotherapy and an unoptimistic course of illness. Her parents Henry (Ben Mendelsohn) and Anna (Essie Davis) are saddened by their loss of control over their daughter to a drug-addicted rascal. Much to his pain, Moses (Toby Wallace)'s family broke up with him because his dysfunctional behavior was out of bounds. It makes 'Babyteeth' (2019) a bittersweet dramedy with a dreamy style and absurd situations surrounding cancer troubles. Equally repulsive, raw and confrontational, but certainly also empathetic and warm. With her distinctive style (pronounced color contrasts, dreamy vagueness) director Shannon Murphy manages to stay away from the usual sentiment about cancer. The effect is an elusive narrative in which much is left to the imagination and it is ultimately up to the viewer whether these love entanglements are painful or ultimate romance.
