Ammonite plot

Mary Anning is a widely respected paleontologist who lives a secluded life in the British coastal town of Lyme Regis. There she spends her days searching for new fossils on the pebble beach and helping out in her mother's shop. One day Mary receives an unsolicited visit from an unknown colleague who asks her if his wife Charlotte, who suffers from 'melancholy', could accompany her during her searches. Since he is willing to pay a lot for it, Mary reluctantly agrees. The contact between the two taciturn women is difficult, until Charlotte falls seriously ill.

Very pleasantly beautiful images - image style, colors, environment, locations, it all comes together very nicely. I have it a bit less with the story - and, I must confess that somewhere at three-quarters or so I actually lost interest a bit too. Perhaps I was somewhat misled there, because the introduction with the nice nerdy role that the fossils get in it (ha, I'm learning something new again...) and the character of Winslet gets some space ... then the film suddenly takes a turn towards something that is probably meant to be romantic - although that doesn't sound too bad to me. So that's why I got a bit lost - it would have suited me better if the whole movie had focused on one motif or the other. Perhaps that will be better with a new viewing, that sometimes depends on the mood of the moment.

Of course I can't pass up a movie with Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan. It takes a while before the film gets going and the ending is also a bit laborious, but overall it is a very nice film; made with a lot of feeling. I was once again fascinated by the excellent performances of both acting guns. Beautiful poster by the way.
