A very fascinating documentary about Johnny Cash that largely continues where Walk the Line (the biopic about the man) left off. Like the biopic, the documentary chooses the performance in Folsom Prison as its anchor point. Because with Cash you have a before and an after. The documentary digs into the singer's personality to understand him better.
The documentary shows a lot and mainly shows Johnny Cash himself. The witnesses you hear (in addition to Cash himself and his film, including Bruce Springsteen, Rick Rubin and Emmylou Harris) really have something to say and remain nicely out of the picture. So no seated conversation with the witnesses in a chair as you often see in documentaries.
I had read the book about him and this documentary really shows the life of the artist Johnny Cash. What he sings and why, what is on his mind, the motivation to do things or not do things, ... I don't think you will find a better documentary about him.
