Bergmál plot

December. With the help of 56 scenes, a portrait of contemporary society is created. The focus is on moments that trigger emotions, such as a remote farm burning down, a school choir singing a Christmas carol or chickens wandering around a slaughterhouse. In a museum, a woman is having a heated telephone conversation, while an elderly lady receives a virtual reality experience from her granddaughter.

56 scenes that have in common that they are set in Iceland in the run-up to Christmas and that are all filmed as a tableau vivant, with a static camera. The shots are carefully thought out, with something noteworthy often happening on both the left and right of the screen. Well done and there are some beautiful moments, but most scenes are at most amusing and often meaningless, which, despite the beauty of the cinematography, often made me shrug my shoulders and wonder what director Rúnar Rúnarsson wanted to say with all this. In any case, form wins over content and that will undoubtedly appeal to certain film lovers. I am not one of them.

The film consists of 56 scenes that are not related to each other except that they each show something of life in Iceland in the last days of the year. In contrast to Andersson's somewhat comparable tableaux films, I did not find the images aesthetically stimulating in this film, none of the scenes seem to want to say anything and there is no absurdist humor in it either. Sometimes a film simply shows life that suddenly reveals itself to you in a mystical experience because the film forces you to really look for the first time, but that is not the case here either. Or: a film like Donbass (2018) - MovieMeter.nl also only shows scenes from the lives of ordinary people, but that life in Ukraine is bizarre because of the war and the film has layers and a message. This film does not have all that: it simply shows the lives of ordinary people in ordinary Iceland, which will be interesting for passionate fans of Iceland but for no one else. Even a film of only 79 minutes is very long. I could not discover what the film wants to say: despite the fact that the theme is Christmas and New Year's Eve, the film has no Christmas message, not even an anti-Christmas message.

During the film I was at 2 stars but because a single scene was amusing, simply because life is amusing sometimes, because a huge number of actors were put to work in this film (each of the 56 scenes required new actors) and because I'm in a good mood I'm adding half a star.

Rather disappointed, I watched the film through. I have no problem with short sketches, on the contrary. But then I prefer quality over quantity. There were 56? Of barely a few minutes, that's quite a lot to get a feel for.

Did I learn more about Iceland? I don't know. What was interesting was the authentic everyday. But before you knew it, it was over. Too bad.
