The Burial of Kojo plot
Esi tells the story of her childhood. When she was little she lived with her father Kojo and her mother in a village in the middle of a lake. They are not well off and a lot changes when her uncle Kwabena comes back after a long time. He strengthens family ties and encourages Kojo to illegally mine gold with him. When Kojo then disappears without a trace, Esi wants to find her father.

Completely different from what I expected based on the description. At first, I was somewhat apprehensive about the type of amateurish monstrosity Nigeria quite often produces, but given JM's positive review above, I was at least reassured about that. Still, I had expected a more direct film, instead of this imaginative, arthouse-esque flashback full of magical realism, yet at an agonizingly slow pace. Unfortunately, despite the beautiful visuals, the film couldn't really draw me in. I felt the magical realism layer added little here, and the story itself was a bit on the thin side. And the pacing doesn't help either.
