De Club van Lelijke Kinderen plot
Paul, an 11-year-old boy with big floppy ears, suddenly has to go on a school trip one day. He soon finds out that he is actually locked up along with hundreds of other children because he is ugly. In this way, President Isimo wants to clean up the country. Paul manages to escape and, together with Sara and a number of other children, founds 'The Club of Ugly Children'. Will Paul and his friends be able to free the other ugly children and overthrow the Isimo regime?

Nice movie. Of course the link was quickly made to the Second World War. It's funny because the story takes place in the future. They handled this well, in terms of locations and special effects. It remains a youth film, of course, but it is also quite enjoyable for adults. The well-known Dutch people are a funny added value, such as Katje Schuurman and Georgina Verbaan.

From the context of a family film, this one is quite enjoyable to follow. All sharp edges are gone and that takes some getting used to, but otherwise the design is fine. Referring to the book of the same name that I have not read yet, so there is no comparison.
As already mentioned here, references to social nationalism from the 1930s are easy to spot. Even with flag, salute and motto. It is a bit simplistic how people try to manipulate the mind and thinking of the population. At times very predictable because there simply is no real violence or deaths in a family film.
Not all great, neither bad nor good, just quite entertaining with your kids around you. Good for once and fine for the genre. The father was really a soft, really annoying in the long run ...

Entertaining family movie. The story has a deeper layer and is developed as a typical family film. So no brutal violence or complicated plot twists, but just straightforward and predictable. Otherwise not disturbing for the adult viewer and fine to watch. The pace is nice and high and the tension and action provide enough variety. The acting is somewhat variable. Visually quite reasonable considering the limited budget. 3.0.
