I ignored the film because the reviews weren't that good, but when I discovered that the film is based on a work by Charles Willeford, I went to see it anyway: Willeford is considered one of the best crime writers of the 20th century and is probably the best postmodern crime writer with an immense influence (for example, Tarantino had his work as an example for Pulp Fiction). Now you may wonder whether this is a good film adaptation of the book - I have not read the book - and whether a film adaptation adds much to the strongly conceptual and dialogue-driven story, but also as a film an exceptionally strong crime story is told with biting bite. postmodern art criticism and virtuoso stacking of layers and lies: if the art critic determines the meaning and value of a work, what stands in the way of him making his own work valuable by putting the signature of a 'real' artist underneath it and the authentic to make artists and art disappear as they are in fact already disappearing in the capitalist art trade? The lie thus becomes the truth and similarly the crime story is based on the fact that no one knows who the other is, i.e. what role he plays and who is paid or defrauded by whom.

Reasonable film in which an art critic is offered an assignment by a wealthy art dealer. In itself an excellent story with excellent characters and some good dialogues about the value and interpretation of art. However, the entire build-up is far too long, meaning the tension comes in too late.

Credit goes to the actors who elevate the film to more than it is. Claes Bang, who did a nice job in The Square, is convincing in his role as an art critic who has to acquire a painting, with both snobbish and charismatic traits and an underlying dark side in which moralistic traits are barely recognizable. Elizabeth Debicki is his pleasant co-star. Donald Sutherland plays his role as the painter whose painting must be acquired with verve. A broken, aging man. Sutherland is well suited for such a role. And finally there is Mick Jagger who has a few nice scenes as an eccentric art dealer.

To a certain extent it is still entertaining to watch and listen to overly designed characters smugly talking about art. That's all there is to it, because the stimulating and biting satire that I think the maker had in mind does not come to fruition. The chatter continues to scratch the surface too much for that and at times it only produces amusing pseudo-intellectual nonsense. And as with anything that continues to scratch the surface when deeper intentions are intended, the entertainment value quickly diminishes.

The thriller part of the film gets bogged down in good intentions and lacks the suspense, sharpness and refined camera work that you find in a Hitchcock film, for example. The film pretends to be more than it is. The disappointing finale confirms this once again. The Burnt Orange Heresy consists of amusing characters housed in a moderately intriguing script. Not fun for the characters. Not fun for the viewer.
