The best horror film I've seen in theaters since Paranormal Activity (2007) is a masterful adaptation of Stephen King's literary masterpiece of the same name. Twenty years after the mixed reception first film version , a cast-iron and uniformly great-playing cast blows this story about religion, death, grief and deep-seated guilt. new life. There are no fake startle effects, no hyperactive montage techniques and not even a scream! There is, however, an excellent adaptation in which the characters are explored in depth, extremely effective make-up and a fantastic score by horror veteran (and my favorite living film composer) Christopher Young. Directors Kevin Kölsch and Dennis Widmyer know how to use all those ingredients to create a pleasant cocktail of family drama and suspense, where the tension is often manageable. The sequence right after father Louis [Jason Clarke] bury his daughter [Jeté Laurence, in a perfect double role] is a perfect piece of suspense and takes us to the truly nerve-racking finale. Jeff Buhler's screenplay even takes the trouble to play with the expectations of those who can still remember the first film adaptation. A perfect horror movie.

Nah.

Bit of a pointless remake. In itself, the old adaptation could use a lick of paint, Kölsch & Widmyer are also two directors who showed a lot of potential in previous films. So there were some expectations with this film. Unfortunately, it's best to put it back straight away.

It is mainly that Kölsch & Widmyer have lost themselves in this film. This 2019 version is in itself a nice remake of the original, but that's about it. There are hardly any negatives, but also few positives. It all remains very flat, with no peaks or troughs.

Some changes to the plot don't add much either. There is a reasonable atmosphere, but it is not really dark or threatening. The elaboration is also well-behaved according to the rules, but because of that a bit too familiar and therefore boring. Acting for a little horror is not bad, but it is not really striking either. And so we could go on and on.

Afterwards a movie where I wondered "why". Nice for people who have never seen or read the original, but otherwise it's just a hassle. More could certainly have been done with this.

2.5*

This revamped Pet Sematary isn't all that bad, but since I watched the old one recently, it's more of the same movie with a new look. We hardly see any new elements in this contemporary Pet Sematary. That certainly could have been done and it was a pity that we later did not see the procession members in the picture. In this way, the film remains safe and we see a lot with other actors and some nicer pictures, especially in 4K. Scary or lurid is the film especially in the second part. And given the extras, there could have been even more in there. The well-known soup needed some extra ingredients, but we only see them sparingly. The ending is good, but maybe the alternate ending is better.

The actors do their best and it is often noticeable that the side actors do better. Father and mother are okay. The little uk doesn't know any better, but Sonia Maria Chirila's role as Rachel is sublimely played. By the way, she also plays in IT 2 so I'm curious about her. Her deformed sister also plays a great part again or has a small part here as well. Just like in the old version, the neighbor is a strong role.

Looking at these Pet Semataries, I just think it's a shame that so little has been done with the sacred ancient site. I would have liked to have seen this more centrally in the film. The theme of bringing death back to life is interesting and not recommended after seeing these films
