Fine.

Especially that the sisters are making horror films again, because their foray into the action/crime genre was completely broken. Horror is clearly more their thing, but to immediately go for a Cronenberg is somewhat risky.

But the Soskas clearly knew what they were doing. The first line of dialogue immediately shows that they are aware of the burden on their shoulders, fortunately they deal with it well. I even thought it was a bit better than Cronenberg's classic, but then again I'm not a big Cronenberg fan.

The effects in particular look great. The disfigurement of the main character is very graphic and very dirty, a piece of body horror that I quite enjoyed. Furthermore, I have no idea how closely the original is followed, I can no longer remember that film that well, but it still seemed unique enough to me and not just a slavish remake.

Visually quite okay, nice acting and a few nice dirty moments. I had a good time with this.

3.5*

Okay.

The Soska sisters' level of directing constantly rises and falls, but they always manage to bring a reasonable idiosyncrasy to their projects. Rabid is also quite different from usual horror films, despite the fact that it is based on a film. I haven't seen it either, and there is certainly no rush for a Cronenberg film.

Rabid can benefit from a fairly gray atmosphere that gives substance and direction to the film itself. Central to the film is Vandervoort, who portrays quite a nice character. However, the Soska sisters focus more on her character's strange traits and apartheid rather than her inner character. That has its pros and cons. For example, such a good character as Mary Mason in American Mary doesn't get anywhere, but it does get more special than that boring other character junk.

Visually the film looks neat, except for the soundtrack. The sisters often seem to have difficulty with this, because the songs and tunes rarely support the images. Most of the atmosphere comes from the stylization in the field of cinematography, which is completed quite neatly. Solid decoration, tight camera work.

In terms of gore, it's also nice and dirty here and there, the mutilations are felt. Although some practical effects are a bit too transparent (just stick something on a face), others make quite an impression. By also mixing in emotional added value, the sisters strengthen the impact that the narrative brings.

The film could have had a 3.5*, but the final choice was lower because the imaginative finale feels completely out of place. While the rest of the film had a gray atmosphere, the final sequence falls out of tune, and unfortunately leaves the viewer with a somewhat disappointing impression. Otherwise a quite competent result that looks good despite the long playing time.
