Donnybrook is a wonderfully gray film as we know it as Out of the Furnace. I certainly don't want to claim that it even comes close, but still... It is a film that you can say is pure. Everything is just pure! You either like it or you don't. The genre doesn't matter. Definitely enjoyed it.

Land of the free, home of the brave.

An inky black picture of American society - I won't comment on how realistic it already is, but it is clear that there is strong pressure from the right to make it get to this point, or worse. Why try to solve the drug problem, it only costs taxpayers' money. Why accommodate a veteran who has risked his life in your army, that only costs taxpayers' money. Let the people fight it out for themselves, that's free. Last man standing, but a bit efficient, so as much as possible at the same time, then we will immediately get rid of the aging population. But what about that Western civilization that is forcefully shoved down the throats of the rest of the world?

Sutton makes a very sad picture of it, where there only seems to be room for Morlocks - we don't get to see the Eloi, if they are there at all. Very depressing, especially because it may be a kind of caricature of reality, but it is not far off either. The individualization of society still seems to continue, and the right-wing shift that seems to go with it. Incomprehensible, like lemmings the people choose.

Furthermore, the film is too depressing that I can bring myself to form an opinion about the mediocre actors, the uninspired cinematography, the brutally ugly color grading that perhaps serves the atmosphere, and the over the top heavy soundtrack. It may serve the purpose.
