"Halloween comes to life."

Perhaps it was the rising sun shining on my airplane screen, making the dark color settings difficult to watch. Perhaps it was the fatigue of waiting for hours at an airport near Alexandria and the stress of passport control and customs. Perhaps it was because I was watching the film as it was landing at Atatürk Airport and the overwhelming view of cargo ships on the Bosphorus was visible from the window. But 'Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween' (2018) did not nearly give me the same warm nostalgic glow as 'Goosebumps' (2015). And yet here they even give a prominent role to Slappy the Dummy, the wooden ventriloquist's dummy who fires nasty jokes at his victims like a razor-sharp stand-up comedian. The film works best when Slappy is simply carrying out his diabolical plans to pit the children against each other. It's a shame that this aspect is thrown out halfway through when the dummy can also bring Halloween decorations to life. This feast of recognition of Goosebumps cameos feels like a rehash of the previous installment. And then Jack Black shows up again as children's book author RL Stine!?

The second part also watched and it was a nice movie. More monsters, but less Jack Black. The story was nice, not too scary, fine for younger children. Furthermore it certainly did not bore.

Revision brings about the same score. This immediately makes it clear which participant of the series is the better, because Haunted Halloween has a too long lead-up and too little reward. The decorations that are brought to life are still fun and the acting can certainly pass, but it is all too short to stand out above its predecessor. The optimal clincher is the thankless supporting role of Jack Black, who actually (quite literally) adds nothing to this sequel. A pass is still possible thanks to the funny decoration of the film.
