"Love and loss in America"
The year is 1871. Peony is a young woman who comes from rural China. She studies martial arts and English and has a jade necklace that protects her from harm. Peony flees to the United States with her friend Lily. In this way she escapes an arranged marriage. In the United States, Peony is sold to the powerful owner of a brothel. She meets Tom Wong and falls in love with him.
