Decent film, but less strong than that of 2001. Here everything revolves purely around crime and lacks the mysterious accents that were more present in Vidocq (2001). The locations and decors are fine. The camera work is sometimes a bit less during the action scenes: sometimes too dark or too fast that it is not clear. 6/10

Looks easy, and that is almost all said about this new Vidocq film adaptation.

Good that Vincent Cassel has the leading role, because he knows how to portray a versatile figure. Vidocq continues to fascinate. Originally a street criminal with a considerable near-national reputation, he works his way up to become the director of the world's first-ever detective force. The world can be strange at times. L'Empereur de Paris describes his efforts to obtain a pardon for his past misdeeds, single-handedly bringing down the crime rate in Paris. He takes on some tough enemies. Who will make it as Emperor of Paris? Organized crime? Or Vidocq?

It's all neatly done and the re-creation of Paris in the Empire period comes out well in a few scenes. Due to the somewhat wrong feeling blockbuster content, it also lacks something essential to take it to a higher level.
