Braid plot

"Everyone plays. Nobody leaves."

Petula Thames and Tilda Darlings are self-proclaimed artists chasing their dreams in New York. However, they find themselves in the world of drugs and prostitution and when they lose a ton of money, they have to pay back a vengeful drug lord. They plot a plan to rob their rich childhood friend Daphne, who has turned into a dangerous schizophrenic prisoner. She is trapped in a fantasy world the three created as children. To get to her, Tilda and Petula are forced to participate in an imaginary, but twisted and violent game. They soon find themselves in a downward spiral of hallucinations, role-playing, torment and murder.

Gem.

From the hand of a talented female director. Not since Revenge (2017) seen so much stylish courage in a debut. Use of color, camera, editing, music; everything breathes a controlled loose hand that you like to see in a first film. Better with vision and a little outside the lines than scoring within a safe framework. Peirone is definitely one to keep an eye on. As a director but certainly also as a writer.

The film uses a fleeting, almost associative way of telling. Not so much per dialogue (which is almost misleadingly linear), but per scene. After almost every cut you are presented with an image or situation in which at least one question mark arises. And through those dreamily fragmentary sequences, the question marks steadily pile up.

It is a pleasant ambiguity that does not quite explain things but rather leaves something in the middle. It never becomes a real mindfuck, but I found it nestled in a very pleasant twilight zone in terms of mystery.

Solid acting by the three ladies as well. All three bring a nice spectrum from assertiveness to instability in their roles. Brewer already made a big impression with Cam (2018) - also such a fine psychological thriller - Waterhouse and Hay were still unknown to me.

Atmospheric location, seemingly small, simple setup, three actresses and a distinctly own elaboration that shows that Peirone knows what she is doing. Few negative points here. Small 4.5*

At the age of 26, director Mitzi Peirone was the first person to get her film off the ground using crypto. This means that she had complete creative control, and she makes the most of it. Braid is unpredictable and originally conceived, but not exactly competently executed. The actresses are cast in particularly caricatural roles very early on, in which Madeline Brewer and Sarah Hay in particular cannot find the balance and therefore quickly become irritating. Of course, slurring is always fun, but in this case simply not very convincing. Imogen Waterhouse is also the only one who knows how to stabilize her role perfectly, unfortunately she only makes up a third of the film. Braid is also very long and not always very interesting, with a final approach that I balked at. Peirone therefore has to rely mainly on a few unique individual scenes that stand out positively and give the film its own face.
