Cartoonist Marie Wankelmut [Susanne Wolf] struggles with the death of her mother and a lack of inspiration. Lack of money - partly caused by Marie getting drunk every night - leads to a desperate decision, the horrific consequences of which she had not foreseen.

Shoemaker, stick to your last! Lennert Hillege and Guido van Driel wrote a screenplay with a captivating main character and a story that has all the ingredients for a genuine nail-biter. Hillege and Van Driel also decided to direct, but a lack of style and bad shot choices break the tension time and again, making the end result disappointingly flat. The film was shot in the Red Light District and Marie lives on the Oudezijdse Voorburgwal next to Casa Rossa, but that doesn't help either.

Baboesjka rightly points to the varying quality of the performances. Susanne Wolff gives a selfless, impressive performance and there is an amusing supporting role for Aart Staartjes as Marie's somewhat confused back-yard neighbor, but Dragos Bucur lacks conviction in the villain role. The result is not bad, but all in all a bit disappointing because this could and should have resulted in a much better film. Let's put it on a waiting list of desired remakes.

Second project by cartoonist Guido van Driel, after Resurrection of a Bastard. Nicely contrary and idiosyncratic again, but still a bit less than its predecessor.

Susanne Wolff plays very well as the broken, alcoholic cartoonist Marie who mainly struggles a bit among the scum in the Amsterdam red light district. The film is convincing again with dry and deep quotes, uncomfortable moments, remarkable characters (that Romanian pimp, that mafia boss with cancer) and its subtlety... and how it all starts with her high heels. But still I missed a bit of the energy that Van Driel used in his previous film and the whole thing goes a bit off track, which makes the thread seem a bit lost. Where exactly does the film want to go?

It has beautiful images of the Red Light District, and again manages to startle the average Dutchman with its idiosyncrasies and self-mockery, but there could have been so much more in it, albeit not streamlined.

3.5*

Watched for half an hour, couldn't make head or tail of it.

I think watching any longer would have been a waste of time
