I would have liked to see the storylines about the social difference and Amalie's struggle with it given more prominence in the film. Currently, they—just like the romance, for that matter—are overshadowed by the dancing. I don't really know anything about that, but I do know that I've seen films with better hip-hop dance scenes not so long ago (Take the Lead and Step Up, both from 2006). The film's predictable ending is, in my opinion, the best part, but it's too little and too late. I wasn't impressed with the film.

Romantic dance film with a love story between rich and poor. Cinematography: inside a dance studio, a house, and dark dance scenes during "the battle." Outdoor shots of street life and subway travel. Music: swinging and rousing contemporary music. Cast: most of them dance very well, though unfortunately, I didn't think the lead actress was one of the strongest dancers.

Amalie lives in a wealthy neighborhood in Oslo and studies modern ballet. Due to her father's financial difficulties, they are forced to move to an apartment in a poorer neighborhood. There she meets street dancer Mikael, who teaches her to dance by instinct, without predetermined steps. The chemistry between Amalie and Mikael is very believable and beautiful to watch! Meanwhile, Amalie tries to keep her wealthy friends by living a double life. Of course, this eventually leads to a confrontation.

As befits a good teen movie, everything works out in the end! The story is thin, but nicely developed. It could have had a bit more depth. The film is now mainly carried by the music and the dance!

It's a shame, Netflix has English dubbing with a Dutch subtitle, because I think "double" translation leads to errors and mistakes. The Dutch subtitle often didn't match the spoken English text. I'm sure the English dubbing isn't without its flaws either! I would have preferred to see the film in Norwegian with a Dutch subtitle... But I don't think the film is special enough to warrant buying the DVD...

A clichéd dance film of Norwegian origin, in which we follow a protagonist who gets herself into enormous trouble with all sorts of foolish decisions. Battle also incorporates multiple dance styles, all of which are subsequently subverted by an overblown dose of drama that evokes little empathy. Fortunately, the concept is quite appealing, and the young cast members perform very well, but as a viewer, you miss a certain degree of fun and originality. Director Katarina Launing focuses more on the overall misery and thus forgets to adequately portray the entertainment of this world. Always a shortcoming in this kind of energetic setting.
